The festive period can be a difficult time for many people, especially after a year of uncertainty. Mental health tends to be neglected during the holidays as many spend more money and the pressure to maintain a festive spirit.This could lead to one’s anxiety, depression and stress.
The South African Depression and Anxiety Group has detailed brochures that you can download on the causes of depression, symptoms as well as managing depression. This is a free resource. Depression is a silent killer and a prevalent mental disorder in South Africa. Stress is a contributing factor to depression.
How to identify your stress symptoms
Stress symptoms include low energy, headaches, upset stomach, aches and pains, chest pains, insomnia etc. Stress management includes being physically active, finding healthy habits, getting enough good sleep, relaxing, good nutrition and eliminating the triggers of your stress. You can keep it simple: get active, eat well, get enough rest - if needs be, do not be afraid to get help.

Anxiety and panic attacks are also on the rise during the festive season. There is an increase in criminal activity as well as the need to spend more than what you earn. Debt can be worrisome and lead to financial distress. There are resources available to assist. You are not alone.
